“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I almost laughed.
After everything, he was asking me about withheld truth.
“Because when I tried to tell you things that mattered, you were always in a meeting.”
He flinched.
Olivia stepped toward him.
“Daniel, listen to me.
Whatever happened years ago has nothing to do with what we have now.”
He turned slowly.
“You watched me sit in my house and talk about becoming a father for the first time.”
Olivia froze.
“You watched me say that.”
Her voice dropped.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“You had years.”
“I thought it would destroy everything.”
Daniel looked through the courtroom doors toward the table where he had expected to end one life and begin another.
“It just did.”
Olivia reached for his arm.
He moved away.
I thought that would feel like victory.
It didn’t.
The man recoiling from her was still the man who had betrayed me.
Her deception did not erase his.
When court resumed, Daniel was quieter.
His attorney requested additional time to review the sealed materials and amend financial disclosures if necessary.
Rebecca agreed, provided protections remained in place for my residence, accounts, and medical expenses during the remainder of my pregnancy.
The judge granted those protections and postponed final dissolution until the new information could be properly reviewed.
Daniel did not get the clean ending he expected that morning.
Neither did Olivia.
Outside the courtroom, she tried one last time.
“Daniel, we can fix this.”
He looked at her with an expression I recognized.
It was the same look I had worn months earlier when I first saw the receipts and still wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation.
He wanted reality to change if he stared at it long enough.
It didn’t.
“I need you to leave,” he said.
Olivia’s face hardened.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
Daniel’s mouth opened, but no answer came.
She looked at me.
For a moment I expected another insult.
Instead, she said, “You think this means you won?”
I shook my head.
“No.
I think it means none of us get to build a future on a lie.”
She walked away alone.
Daniel remained near the courtroom doors.
“Emma.”
I turned.
His eyes dropped to my stomach.
For once, there was no impatience in his face.
Only shame.
“I didn’t know,” he said.
I understood exactly what he meant.
He did not know about the other child.
