He believed Olivia represented a clean beginning.
She had encouraged that belief.
She let him describe their relationship as something new, exciting, uncomplicated.
But Olivia’s connection to him was older than our marriage.
And she had hidden the most important part.
Daniel turned to me.
“How did you get this?”
Rebecca answered before I could.
“Through lawful medical and legal channels after information became relevant to Mrs.
Carter’s prenatal care.
Nothing before the court was obtained improperly.”
Daniel’s attorney leaned toward him and whispered urgently.
I could not hear every word, but I caught enough.
Stop talking.
Listen.
Do not make this worse.
Daniel ignored him.
He looked at Olivia.
“How old?”
She stared at the floor.
“Daniel—”
“How old is the child?”
The judge intervened again.
“The court is not going to permit private information concerning a child to become spectacle.
Counsel will address only what is relevant.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That is precisely our request, Your Honor.
We do not intend to expose the child’s identity.
The relevance is that Mr.
Carter submitted statements in these proceedings claiming he had no undisclosed family obligations or circumstances that could affect the financial representations made during dissolution.”
Daniel turned toward his attorney.
“I didn’t know.”
His attorney’s expression told me that ignorance was not going to erase the problem.
Rebecca continued.
“Mrs.
Carter is not alleging that Mr.
Carter knowingly concealed a child he understood to be his.
In fact, the evidence before the court strongly suggests Ms.
Bennett withheld that information from him.”
Daniel looked almost relieved for half a second.
Then the meaning reached him.
Olivia had hidden a child from him.
The woman he planned to marry had known something about his life that he did not.
And she had stood on the courthouse steps minutes earlier telling me that she matched his ambitions better than I did.
He whispered, “Why?”
Olivia’s chin lifted.
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“Then explain it.”
“Not here.”
Daniel laughed once, without humor.
“You came here.
You insisted on coming.”
Olivia looked toward the judge, then Rebecca, then me.
She was searching for a path out.
There wasn’t one that preserved the story she had told Daniel.
Rebecca placed another document before the judge.
