“This is correspondence provided in support of the sealed filing.”
Olivia’s face tightened.
I knew that document well.
It was one of the pieces that had finally made the pattern impossible to dismiss.
The medical connection had opened a door.
The records behind it had shown that Olivia had been aware of Daniel’s connection to the child long before she reentered his life romantically.
She had not approached him to reveal it.
She had approached him and started an affair.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew before us?”
Olivia said nothing.
“Before you and me started?”
Her silence answered him.
His face twisted.
“You knew there was a child connected to me, and you said nothing while I left my wife?”
Olivia finally snapped.
“You were already unhappy.”
Daniel blinked.
She heard how weak it sounded and pushed harder.
“You complained about your marriage constantly.
You said Emma cared more about patients and the baby than about you.
You said you felt trapped.”
I felt Daniel glance toward me.
I did not look back.
There it was.
The version of our marriage he had sold to justify what he was doing.
My work had become neglect.
My pregnancy had become selfishness.
His affair had become escape.
Olivia continued, her voice sharpening.
“I didn’t force you to leave her.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“You just forgot to mention you’d been hiding something like this from me.”
“You don’t know the circumstances.”
“Then tell me.”
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
For the first time that morning, Olivia no longer looked polished.
Her shoulders were rigid, her breathing shallow.
She was not the woman in burgundy who had climbed the courthouse steps like she was attending a celebration.
She looked cornered.
But Rebecca was not finished.
“Your Honor, there is a second issue.”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
His attorney whispered something that sounded almost like a prayer.
The judge gestured for Rebecca to proceed.
Rebecca picked up the envelope she had placed beside the folder.
“During settlement discussions, Mr.
Carter repeatedly characterized the marital residence and certain accounts as assets Mrs.
Carter should vacate or relinquish quickly so the dissolution could be completed without delay.”
Daniel’s expression changed again.
This was familiar territory to him.
He had spent weeks telling me the house was too expensive for me alone.
He had suggested I move in with my mother temporarily.
He had framed it as kindness.
