“The medical inquiry ultimately led to documentation suggesting that Mr.
Carter had previously been connected to another child whose records contained the same relevant paternal history.”
Daniel went completely still.
The courtroom seemed to shrink around us.
He stared at Rebecca.
“What other child?”
Olivia stood abruptly.
Daniel turned toward her.
That was the moment he understood that whatever was happening, she knew more than he did.
“Sit down,” the judge said firmly.
Olivia obeyed.
Slowly.
Daniel looked from her to me, then back to the sealed folder.
“No,” he said.
“That’s impossible.”
Rebecca did not argue with him.
She removed another page.
“The records identify Olivia Bennett as the mother.”
Daniel’s chair scraped against the floor.
His attorney pulled him back before he could fully stand.
He stared at Olivia as if he were seeing her for the first time.
“You have a child?”
Olivia’s eyes flashed toward me.
Not toward him.
Toward me.
That told Daniel even more.
“You knew?” he demanded.
Olivia swallowed.
“Daniel, this isn’t the place.”
“What child?”
“Mr.
Carter,” the judge warned.
Daniel sat, but only because his attorney put a hand on his shoulder.
Rebecca turned one page around so Daniel’s counsel could inspect it.
The document itself remained far enough from Daniel that he could not snatch it, and the court kept its private medical details protected.
Rebecca spoke carefully.
“Years ago, before Mr.
and Mrs.
Carter married, Ms.
Bennett gave birth to a child.
The records submitted to this court include documentation showing that Mr.
Carter was identified in connection with that child’s paternal history.”
Daniel shook his head violently.
“No.
Olivia would have told me.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
He looked at her again.
“You would have told me.”
She said nothing.
His voice lowered.
“Wouldn’t you?”
The confidence he had carried up the courthouse steps was gone.
I had imagined this moment so many times that I expected satisfaction.
Instead, I felt something colder.
Clarity.
Daniel had betrayed me, but he had also built his betrayal on a fantasy.
