Chapter 2 — They Threatened the Colonel—Then Her Daughter’s Voicemail Began to Play

4.9Editorial score

I did not turn her pain into a briefing or reduce it to dates and evidence.

I let her tell it in her own order.

She said the confrontation began that afternoon at the Prescott estate.

She had told Ethan she wanted to leave the marriage.

She had packed one small bag and asked him to return financial documents he kept locked in his study.

Ethan laughed at her.

Margaret arrived within minutes, although Emily had never called her.

Brandon came soon afterward and parked his vehicle behind Emily’s car so she could not leave.

They brought her into the guest house under the pretense of discussing the situation privately.

Once inside, Ethan took her phone.

Margaret demanded that Emily sign a statement saying she had invented previous arguments because of stress.

Emily refused.

Brandon stood outside the only door.

When Emily tried to push past Ethan, he grabbed her arms.

She pulled away, stumbled against a table, and tore her dress.

The marks on her wrists came when Ethan and Brandon forced her back into the room.

They left her there while they decided how to protect the family’s reputation.

They did not realize she had already called me.

Emily had hidden the phone beneath a cushion when Ethan entered.

The call stayed connected long enough to capture their voices before he found it.

Later, when Margaret returned and told her that no hospital, police officer, or judge would challenge the Prescott name, Emily pretended to feel faint.

Ethan finally agreed to take her to the hospital because he feared what would happen if she became seriously ill on the estate.

They planned to control what she told the doctors.

They had not expected me to arrive first.

The physician completed Emily’s examination and spoke with the police officer outside the room.

The injuries, she explained, were not consistent with one simple fall.

There were marks on both arms, swelling near one shoulder, and signs that Emily had resisted being restrained.

Margaret’s claim of an emotional episode also began to collapse.

Emily was frightened, but she was coherent.

She knew where she was, what day it was, and exactly what had happened.

There was no medical evidence that supported Ethan’s accusation that she had become irrational or confused.

The nurse added her own statement.

She had heard Margaret mention connections in the courts, media, and state government.

She had heard Brandon threaten legal action.

She had watched Ethan insist that he could decide where Emily went after discharge.

The Prescotts had created another set of witnesses while trying to intimidate us.

The officer returned to the room and asked Emily a simple question.

“Where is your phone now?”

“Ethan took it.”

From the corridor came a soft electronic chime.

Everyone looked toward the sound.

Margaret reached into her handbag and silenced a phone.

Emily stared at it.

“That is mine.”

Margaret held the bag against her side.

“This is a family device.

We pay for it.”

The officer stepped closer.

“Do not remove anything from that bag.”

Brandon moved between them.

“You do not have permission to search my mother.”

“No one asked for your legal opinion,” the officer said.

“Step back.”

For the first time that evening, Brandon looked uncertain.

Margaret asked to call the family’s attorney.

The officer told her she was free to do so.
