Mom began walking to the mailbox again.

She bought a new phone and programmed my number herself.

Mom had kept the dates.

The servers had kept the logs.

The bank had kept the request.

The recorder had kept Clara’s voice.

And when the doctor asked whether my mother could speak for herself, Mom did not need me to answer.

She answered for herself.
