A smile touched his face.

He reached across the table and placed a small object in my palm.

It was the spare key to his apartment.

“No sheds,” he said.

For ten years, I had believed becoming a judge was proof that my parents had been wrong about me.

But sitting across from Grandpa, I understood that my title had never been the victory.
