Jessica was crying now.
“He told me the account was family savings.
He didn’t say it was for the girls until after the transfer.”
“Where is it?” Claire asked.
“Most of it is still in the account.”
Claire sat straighter.
“How much?”
Jessica named an amount.
A large majority of the final transfer had not yet been sent onward.
Brandon had planned to move it later that day.
Claire wrote down everything Jessica said.
Then she gave Jessica one instruction.
“Don’t move another dollar.”
Jessica whispered, “I won’t.”
Claire didn’t trust her.
But the bank already had the account information and the dispute report.
By early afternoon, the transfer trail was being reviewed.
Funds that had not yet moved beyond the receiving account were placed under restriction while ownership and authorization were investigated.
It did not magically put $180,000 back into the girls’ college account.
But it stopped the bleeding.
That was the first reversal Brandon had not anticipated.
The second arrived at 3:40 p.m.
Brandon came home.
Claire saw his truck pull into the driveway and felt her body react before her mind did.
Her heartbeat accelerated.
Libby stood beside her.
Natty closed the laptop but did not move it.
Brandon entered through the kitchen door still wearing his work clothes.
His eyes went immediately to the computer.
“What did you do?” he demanded.
Claire remained seated.
“I protected our daughters.”
“You called the bank?”
“Yes.”
His expression changed.
“You had no right.”
Claire almost laughed.
Instead she said, “You emptied their account.”
“It was my money too.”
“No,” Libby said.
Brandon looked at her as if he had forgotten his daughters were capable of speaking back.
Libby stood perfectly still.
“It was ours,” she said.
“You spent seventeen years telling us it was for our education.”
Brandon pointed at the laptop.
“Give me that.”
Natty pulled it closer.
“No.”
His face flushed.
“Natalie.”
“No.”
Claire stood between him and the table.
“You’re not touching their devices.”
Brandon stared at his wife.
Something in the room had changed since morning.
He had left believing Claire knew nothing.
