Most of the money had traveled through the account linked to Jessica.
But that wasn’t the whole story.
Libby opened another saved conversation.
This one wasn’t romantic.
It was frightened.
Jessica had written: They want the money by Friday.
Brandon: I can get most of it.
Jessica: From where?
Brandon: Don’t ask.
Jessica: They said they know where you live.
Brandon: Once I pay them, we’re gone.
Jessica: What about Claire and the girls?
Brandon: They won’t know until we’re out.
Claire read the exchange slowly.
The affair was still there.
So was the plan to abandon them.
But underneath both was another disaster.
Brandon had been trying to solve a debt.
The girls had found references to a private side deal connected to property work Brandon had entered without telling Claire.
He had put money into it, borrowed more when the deal began failing, and kept trying to cover the old obligation with new money.
By the time he understood how deep he was, he owed far more than he could quietly repay.
So he had started liquidating whatever he could reach.
First smaller personal accounts.
Then money moved through Jessica.
Finally the college fund.
The $180,000 wasn’t being stolen merely to finance a romantic escape.
Brandon intended to use much of it to satisfy the people pressuring him, then leave with Jessica before Claire discovered what remained behind.
That was the danger behind the missing money.
He wasn’t simply walking out on his family.
He was leaving them at the address known to the people he owed.
At 11:18 that morning, Claire’s phone received another call.
Jessica.
Claire almost ignored it.
Then she answered.
Jessica spoke so quickly Claire could barely understand her.
“Is Brandon there?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you what happened?”
“He told me enough.”
Jessica became quiet.
Claire looked at Libby and Natty.
“Did you know the money came from my daughters?”
The silence stretched.
Then Jessica said, “Not at first.”
Claire closed her eyes.
That answer hurt in a different way because it implied there had been a point when Jessica did know.
“When did you find out?”
“This morning.”
“And you still accepted it.”
“Brandon said he would fix everything once we left.”
There it was.
We.
No denial of the affair.
No misunderstanding.
No innocent professional relationship.
Claire’s marriage was finished before either woman said it aloud.
