“Where is the money?”
There was a pause on Brandon’s end.
Then a sigh.

Annoyance.
“Claire, calm down.”
Her daughters both heard it through the speaker.

“Where is the girls’ money?”
“We’ll talk tonight.”
“No.
We’ll talk now.”
“It’s complicated.”
“Did you transfer a hundred and eighty thousand dollars out of their college fund?”
Another pause.
Then Brandon said something Claire would remember long after she forgot the exact sound of his voice.
“They can take loans like everyone else.”
Libby’s jaw tightened.
Natty looked away.

“Come home.”
“I have work.”
“You have forty-eight hours.”
Silence.
For the first time, Brandon sounded afraid.
“What did you say?”
Claire looked at the threat glowing on Natty’s laptop.
“You heard me.”
“Claire, listen to me.
If somebody contacted you, don’t answer them.
Don’t call anybody.
Don’t show anyone anything.”
That was all she needed.
The message was real.
“You know who sent it.”
“I said don’t get involved.”
“You emptied our daughters’ college fund and brought a threat to our house.
I am involved.”
His voice sharpened.
“Stay out of my business.”
Claire ended the call.

They reported the disappearance of the college money, explained that the transfer was disputed, and asked that any receiving institutions be alerted while the transaction was reviewed.
They also reported the threatening message to law enforcement.
Claire did exactly what Brandon had told her not to do.
