The expression on his face changed from alarm to betrayal, as if I had violated something sacred by refusing to protect the people who had broken my leg.
“You set us up.”
“No,” I said.
“I asked what happened.
You answered.”
Marjorie backed toward the wall.
“She twisted everything.
She always twists everything.”
The investigator opened a second folder.
“Mrs.
Whitmore, we have medical documentation of a displaced fracture caused by concentrated blunt force.
We have photographs of an impact mark consistent with a cylindrical kitchen object.
We also have a recorded admission that you struck her.”
Marjorie shook her head.
“I said I barely touched her.”
“That was the admission.”
Howard moved toward the door, but one of the security officers stepped into his path.
“I didn’t do anything,” he said quickly.
“I never touched her.”
“You watched,” I said.
He would not look at me.
The investigator turned to him.
“Were you present when she was injured?”
Howard hesitated.
Ryan answered again.
“He was in the living room.”
Howard’s face twitched.
The investigator waited.
Finally, Howard whispered, “I was in the kitchen.”
Ryan spun toward him.
“Dad.”
“I didn’t know she would hit her that hard.”
Marjorie made a strangled sound.
“Howard!”
He lifted both hands.
“You told me you were only going to frighten her.”
The room erupted.
Marjorie accused Howard of lying.
Ryan ordered everyone to stop talking.
Howard insisted the entire confrontation had been Ryan’s idea because Ryan wanted me to transfer my paycheck into an account controlled by the family.
I listened as their united story collapsed into three competing versions.
Ryan had always told me that no one would believe me over all of them.
He had built his power around their agreement to repeat the same lie.
The moment pressure touched that agreement, it shattered.
The investigator did not interrupt.
She let them blame one another while the recorder captured every word.
Then Ryan reached across the bed and grabbed for the device.
One of the officers caught his wrist before his fingers reached the folder.
Ryan jerked away.
“Get your hands off me.”
“Step back from the patient.”
“She is my wife.”
“That does not give you control over her.”
Ryan looked at me with naked hatred.
“You have no idea what you’ve done,” he said.
“You think you can survive without this family? You will come crawling back before your first physical therapy bill arrives.”
