Chapter 7 — They Erased Claire From the Jet—But Charles Had Planned Ahead

No champagne waited inside.

No audience watched.

There was only the low sound of the engines and the captain standing near the door.

“Manifest is correct, Mrs.

Whitmore,” he said.

I smiled.

“Thank you, Captain.”

I took my old seat by the window.

Not because it had belonged to me before Savannah sat there.

Not because Graham had lost it.

Because Charles had given me something larger than control of an aircraft.

He had left evidence that my presence had been seen.

During the worst months of his illness, when Graham was absent and Eleanor was managing appearances, I had sometimes wondered whether quiet loyalty mattered if no one acknowledged it.

Charles had acknowledged it.

Not with praise in a room full of people.

With preparation.

He had known that after his death, the people most interested in power might mistake silence for surrender.

So he made sure silence would not leave me defenseless.

I opened my handbag before takeoff and found the emerald earrings in the small inside pocket where I had placed them on the tarmac.

For years, I had worn them because Graham gave them to me on an anniversary.

I no longer wanted them for that reason.

I held them for a moment, then closed the case.

Some things could be recovered without needing to be worn again.

Outside the window, the runway stretched forward.

Captain Keller’s voice came through the cabin, calm and familiar, announcing our departure.

This time, nobody had removed my name.
