Chapter 1 — The Worker Recognized the Twins Before Daniel Even Said Why They Were Hiding

The folder opened with a soft crackle of paper.

Daniel Cole had heard louder sounds under far worse circumstances, but something about that small noise changed the room.

Emma’s hand closed around Grace’s so tightly that her knuckles whitened.

The night worker looked from the girls to Daniel, then back down at the file.

“They’ve been here before,” Daniel said.

It wasn’t a question anymore.

The woman gave a careful nod.

“Yes.”

Emma took half a step backward.

Grace moved with her automatically, still pressed against Rex’s side.

The retired K9 remained calm, but his eyes tracked every movement in the room.

Daniel kept his voice even.

“Emma told me people had promised to help before.”

The worker closed the folder slightly, as if suddenly aware that the children could see it.

“My name is Claire,” she said quietly.

“I’m the overnight intake supervisor.

And yes, the girls have had contact with county services.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

He didn’t ask for confidential details he had no right to demand.

He had spent enough years around rules and chains of command to understand boundaries.

But he also understood fear.

Emma was staring at that folder as though it contained something capable of dragging her straight back into the rain.

Claire noticed too.

She crouched several feet away from the twins.

“Emma, I’m not going to make you go anywhere this second.

All right?”

Emma’s expression did not soften.

“That’s what they said before.”

Claire went still.

Daniel saw the words land.

Grace whispered something against Rex’s fur.

It was the first time Daniel had heard her voice.

“Don’t send us back.”

Claire’s face changed completely.

She stood and reached for the desk phone.

Emma recoiled.

“Who are you calling?”

“My supervisor and the emergency response worker,” Claire said.

“Nobody is calling your father to come pick you up.”

Emma searched her face for several seconds.

“Promise?”

Claire hesitated before answering, and Daniel respected her for it.

“I promise I will not call him here without making sure you’re safe first.”

That was not the sweeping reassurance adults sometimes gave frightened children because they wanted the fear to stop quickly.

It was specific.

Emma seemed to recognize the difference.

Her shoulders lowered by perhaps an inch.

Daniel remained near the door while Claire made the call.

He could have left then.

His responsibility as a security contractor had effectively ended when he brought the children to people authorized to handle the situation.

But Emma had asked him not to leave.

So he stayed.

Claire brought dry blankets.

She found two pairs of oversized socks from a donation cabinet and paper cups of warm cocoa that neither twin touched at first.

Rex lay on the floor between their chairs.

Grace finally drank when Daniel set his own cup on the floor beside Rex and said, “He’s supervising mine too.”
