Chapter 5 — The Maid’s Daughter Touched the Millionaire—Then He Opened His Medical File

4.9Editorial score

In nearly ten years, he had thanked her thousands of times for completed tasks.

This sounded different.

—You’re welcome, Nathaniel.

She had never used his first name before.

He closed his eyes.

The following morning, he canceled every meeting for the week.

His executives reacted as though the city had lost power.

Calls arrived from board members, advisers, and department heads.

Nathaniel answered only one group call.

He told them he was receiving treatment for a serious heart condition.

He would work when medically permitted, and the company’s leadership team would operate without waiting for his approval on every decision.

Silence followed.

Nathaniel expected questions about market confidence, succession plans, or control.

Instead, one of the executives said they hoped he recovered.

Another told him the company would manage.

Nathaniel ended the call unsettled by the discovery that the world could continue without collapsing and that people could know he was vulnerable without using it against him.

His recovery was not simple.

Medication made him tired.

Walking the length of the corridor left him breathless.

Some days the transplant evaluation brought encouraging numbers.

Other days Dr.

Cole entered with the careful expression Nathaniel had learned to fear.

Nathaniel responded to uncertainty the only way he knew how: he tried to control everyone around him.

He questioned every dosage, demanded every result, and once attempted to conduct a three-hour conference call from his hospital bed.

Dr.

Cole unplugged the room’s speaker.

Mrs.

Whitmore confiscated Nathaniel’s second phone.

Elena removed the third from beneath his pillow.

Lily found the fourth inside the drawer and handed it to her mother.

Nathaniel stared at all of them.

—Is this a conspiracy?

—Yes, Lily said.

—Your heart needs mouse quiet.

Even Dr.

Cole laughed.

Two weeks later, Nathaniel returned to the penthouse under strict instructions.

The apartment looked unchanged at first.

Gray marble.

Black glass.

White walls.

Then he noticed Lily’s drawing attached to the refrigerator with a blue magnet.

He stopped in the kitchen doorway.

—There were no magnets on that refrigerator.

Mrs.

Whitmore continued preparing his tea.

—There is one now.

—It doesn’t match anything.

—That appears to be its greatest strength.

Nathaniel left the drawing where it was.

Elena’s work schedule changed.

Nathaniel arranged regular childcare during her shifts, but Lily still visited after school whenever Elena worked late.

He did not frame the arrangement as generosity.

Elena would not have accepted charity, and he respected her too much to disguise it poorly.

Instead, he admitted that Lily’s presence helped him follow the doctor’s instructions.

—She reports me, he told Elena.
