—Who listens to you when you’re scared?

The question silenced the room again.

Mrs.

Whitmore stood near the door.

Her face remained composed, but Nathaniel saw grief in her eyes.

She had served him breakfast every morning for nearly ten years, watched him work through holidays, and cleared untouched dinners from a table built for twelve.

She knew the answer.

So did Elena, although she had worked there only two weeks.

No one listened because Nathaniel never spoke.

No one stood beside him because he had trained everyone to stand back.

He had mistaken distance for strength until distance was all he had.

Nathaniel picked up the phone and called Dr.

Cole.

The doctor answered on the first ring.

—Tell me you’re coming.

Nathaniel glanced through the glass wall.

The executives waited in the living room with their briefcases still closed.

They had crossed the city because Nathaniel Cross never changed a schedule.

He pressed the speaker button.

—What happens if I don’t?

Dr.

Cole’s response was immediate.

—You could collapse.

You could suffer irreversible damage.

Or you could die before pride allows you to admit you need help.

Elena looked away.

Mrs.

Whitmore did not.

Lily climbed into the chair across from Nathaniel and folded her hands in her lap.

—Can you treat it? Nathaniel asked.

—We can stabilize you.

We can begin the transplant evaluation.

We can give you a chance.

But not from your office.

Nathaniel’s gaze dropped to the doll.

For years, every difficult decision had been measured in risk, leverage, timing, and control.

He could calculate the exposure of a billion-dollar acquisition before anyone else finished reading the first page.

This decision contained only two choices.

Go to the hospital and let people see him afraid.

Or remain behind his glass walls until his heart made the choice for him.

Lily slid the doll closer.

—You can hold her in the car.

A strange sound escaped Nathaniel.

It took him a second to recognize it as the beginning of a laugh.

The sound was rough and brief, but Mrs.

Whitmore’s eyes widened.

Elena pressed her lips together as if she were trying not to cry.

Nathaniel picked up the doll.

Then he stood.

His knees weakened almost immediately.

The desk caught one hand.

The other tightened around the doll.

Elena moved first, gripping his arm.

Mrs.

Whitmore crossed the room and supported him from the other side.

Nathaniel’s instinct was to pull away.
