Chapter 8 — She Named Chicago’s Most Feared Man—Then Her Husband Entered the ER

“A place Daniel has never seen.”

Raffael nodded.

She studied him.

“You’re not going to ask me to come with you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because you did not survive one man’s control to become another man’s responsibility.”

The answer hurt and healed something at the same time.

Evelyn picked up a small envelope from the bedside table.

Inside was a copy of the statement she had signed that morning.

For years, other people had decided what her words meant.

Daniel called her unstable.

Society friends called her fortunate.

Raffael once called her protected.

Now the statement carried her own name beneath her own account of what happened.

No correction.

No permission.

No one else’s version.

She walked toward the door.

Raffael stepped aside to let her pass first.

In the corridor where she had once arrived unconscious and bleeding, nurses looked up and smiled.

The young doctor who had fought to save her gave a quiet nod.

Security opened the elevator.

Evelyn entered, then turned back.

“Raffael.”

He met her gaze.

“Thank you for coming.”

His expression softened.

“You called.”

The elevator doors began to close.

For the first time in years, Evelyn did not feel like someone’s wife, someone’s mistake, or someone’s possession.

She was simply the woman who had reached the hospital alive, spoken one dangerous name, and finally told the truth in her own voice.
