The recovered audio file loaded slowly on Vincent’s tablet.
Daniel Vaughn stared at the spinning symbol as if he could stop it by force of will.
Raffael Moretti stood beneath the fluorescent lights with the gray folder open in one hand.
He did not threaten Daniel.
He did not step closer.
He simply watched him.
That frightened Daniel more than shouting would have.
“What exactly do you think you have?” Daniel asked.
His voice still carried authority, but the edges had begun to crack.
Vincent looked at the screen.
“A deleted call recovered from the clinic’s internal system.”
Daniel turned toward the young doctor.
“This is a private medical matter.
Remove these men.”
The doctor did not move.
Neither did hospital security.
Only minutes earlier, Daniel had spoken as though the entire floor belonged to him.
Now every person in the corridor was watching the tablet.
The audio began with static.
Then Daniel’s voice came through clearly.
“She’s my wife.
Discharge her.”
A nervous clinic employee answered, “Mr.
Vaughn, the physician wants imaging.
Her symptoms could indicate internal bleeding.”
“I said discharge her.”
“We need a medical reason.”
“Write anxiety.
She has a history.”
There was a pause.
Then Daniel added, colder, “And remove my name from the call record.”
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Daniel’s face remained still for several seconds.
Then he gave a dismissive laugh.
“That proves nothing.
I was told she was stable.”
Vincent slid a page from the folder.
“The triage nurse documented a blood pressure of eighty-four over fifty-two.
She noted abdominal rigidity, active bleeding, dizziness, and loss of consciousness in the waiting room.”
Daniel’s eyes flicked toward the operating-room doors.
Raffael noticed.
“You knew she was bleeding,” he said.
“I knew she was dramatic.”
The words had barely left Daniel’s mouth when the operating-room doors opened.
A surgeon stepped into the corridor, mask lowered beneath his chin.
Exhaustion showed in his eyes.
“Who is the emergency contact for Evelyn Carter?”
Raffael moved first.
“I am.”
Daniel stepped beside him.
“I’m her husband.”
The surgeon looked from one man to the other.
“We controlled the bleeding.
She suffered a ruptured spleen and significant abdominal trauma.
She lost a dangerous amount of blood.”
