Chapter 7 — My Son Uninvited Me From the Dinner I Had Been Funding

4.9Editorial score

“You are taking advantage of an elderly woman’s distress.”

Wesley’s expression cooled.

“I have represented Mrs.

Kelley for decades.

She understands the documents, the consequences, and the alternatives.

Continuing to question her competence because she stopped funding you is not a legal argument.”

Benjamin’s jaw tightened.

“What worse decision?”

Wesley looked directly at him.

“Attempting to move money, revive an authorization, or access an account after receiving this notice.”

The room became very quiet.

Benjamin’s phone slipped lower in his hand.

“I would never do that.”

“Good.”

Wesley pushed the envelope toward him.

“Then signing the acknowledgment should not concern you.”

Benjamin did not touch it.

Genevieve did.

She tore it open, read the first page, and stopped halfway down.

“What does ‘review of prior transfers’ mean?”

Wesley answered carefully.

“It means the bank will verify that every transfer was made under valid authority.

Mrs.

Kelley has not accused anyone of theft.

The bank is simply documenting how each recurring payment was established.”

Genevieve turned toward Benjamin again.

He had gone pale.

“Were they all authorized?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“All of them?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation changed everything.

I felt no triumph.

Only a deep, exhausted clarity.

Wesley noticed it too.

“Benjamin,” he said, “do not answer casually.”

Benjamin sat down.

His knees seemed to give way before he reached the chair.

“The first transfers were authorized,” he said.

“After that, some vendors changed.

I updated routing details.

Mom knew I handled things for her.”

“I knew you helped me set up online access after Thomas died,” I said.

“I did not know you used that access to attach new payments.”

Genevieve took one step away from him.

“How many?”

“I do not remember.”

Wesley closed the estate file.

“Then the bank’s review is necessary.”

Benjamin looked at me with panic replacing anger.

“Mom, I can explain every payment.”

“You will explain them to Clara.”

“Do not do this.”

“I already did.”

His voice broke.

“I could lose everything.”
