“Did either of you ask them whether they wanted you living here?”
Julia gave me an irritated look.
“They’re our parents.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Kyle put his beer on the table harder than necessary.
“We have kids.
We need space.
You have money.
They have a huge house.
Why are you acting like this is complicated?”
Because to him, it really wasn’t complicated.
I earned more, so what I owned was available.
My parents were older, so their preferences were negotiable.
Julia had a need, so everyone else had an obligation.
He had already reduced the entire family to an equation where his household always ended on the winning side.
Dad looked at him.
“This was supposed to be our anniversary present.”
Kyle shrugged.
“And you still get to use it.”
Dad’s expression changed.
Not dramatically.
He did not shout.
He did not stand.
He simply looked older for a second.
That hurt more than anything Kyle had said to me.
I turned to Julia.
“When did you decide to move in?”
She hesitated.
Then she lifted her chin.
“We talked about it after Dad mentioned the house.”
“Dad mentioned that I bought them a home.”
“He said there was room.”
Dad shook his head immediately.
“I said Thomas found a place with room for everyone to visit.”
Julia looked away.
Visit.
Not occupy.
Not control.
Not monetize.
I reopened the folder.
Kyle laughed once, without humor.
“You going to perform surgery on us with paperwork now?”
“No,” I said.
“I’m going to make sure everybody understands what happened here.”
That made him lean forward again.
He liked confrontation when he believed anger would decide the outcome.
I had spent my career in rooms where panic was dangerous.
Precision mattered more.
“So explain it,” he said.
I did.
I explained that the house had been placed in a trust.
I explained that Mom and Dad were the lifetime beneficiaries.
I explained that I had made the purchase and arranged the expenses specifically to keep their housing secure.
Then I explained the part that finally erased the last of Kyle’s confidence.
“You cannot list this house for short-term rentals.”
His eyes flicked toward Julia.
