Chapter 4 — My Husband Raised a Belt—Then His Mother Revealed Why He Married Me

4.9Editorial score

The judge denied it until she finished reviewing the immediate safety issue.

Derek tried one final approach.

He turned toward me and softened his voice.

“This got out of hand,” he said.

“We were exhausted.

We had been traveling all day.

I made a stupid joke, and she misunderstood.”

I looked at the paused image on the monitor.

His belt was raised over his shoulder.

The buckle was aimed toward my face.

“That was not a joke,” I said.

“You know I would never really hurt you.”

“You swung twice.”

“You embarrassed me.”

The words escaped before he could stop them.

His lawyer closed his eyes.

There it was.

Not regret.

Not confusion.

Humiliation.

He was not sorry he had raised the belt.

He was furious that I had made him miss.

The judge granted the emergency protective order and extended it pending a full hearing.

Derek was prohibited from returning to the house, contacting me directly, or approaching the gym.

The transfer documents and recordings were forwarded to investigators for review.

As the court officer approached him, Derek looked at the red glove on my table.

“You planned this,” he said.

I shook my head.

“No.

I prepared to protect myself.

There is a difference.”

Outside the courtroom, his mother attempted to speak to me.

She hurried down the hallway while her attorney called after her.

“You do not understand what happened,” she said.

“Derek has always had problems controlling his temper.

I was trying to protect both of you.”

I stopped walking.

“You told him to get my signature before I understood why he married me.”

Her eyes moved toward my lawyer.

“That conversation was taken out of context.”

“What context makes it acceptable?”

She had no answer.

I continued toward the elevator.

Behind me, she called my name again.

I did not turn around.

The legal process lasted months, not minutes.

That surprised people who had seen the footage and assumed clear evidence created instant justice.

It did not.

There were interviews, motions, property reviews, and repeated attempts by Derek’s lawyer to describe the bedroom confrontation as mutual violence.

But every version of Derek’s story collided with the same facts.

He had locked the door.

He had removed the belt.

He had announced his intention to establish rules through fear.

He had swung first.

He had called his mother after being stopped.

And she had referred to a plan involving my assets before either of them knew I was recording.
