Chapter 3 — My Husband Pushed Me Off a Cliff—Then a Stranger Called Me Emma

4.9Editorial score

I did not know yet how to reconcile those two truths.

But I had time.

Michael had tried to make sure I wouldn’t.

When authorities finally shifted the mountain search from rescue to presumed recovery, Michael organized a funeral.

There was no recovered body.

He did not need one to perform grief for people who believed the storm had taken me.

He chose flowers.

He accepted condolences.

He stood in a dark suit while people spoke softly around him.

Ashley stayed close enough that several witnesses noticed.

Investigators were watching too.

So was I.

From my hospital room, through a secure live feed, I saw the man who had promised to protect me stand at the funeral he believed marked the end of me.

For the first few minutes, Michael played his part.

His shoulders were lowered.

His voice was quiet.

He accepted embraces.

Then the room thinned out.

His mask slipped.

Ashley said something I couldn’t hear.

Michael gave the same small laugh I remembered from the cliff.

Then an audio pickup near them caught his voice clearly.

“They both froze to death,” he said.

I stopped breathing.

Michael glanced toward the closed doors and added, “That worthless woman got exactly what she deserved.”

My father’s hand closed around the edge of the table beside me.

He looked ready to destroy something.

I felt surprisingly calm.

The words hurt, but they also ended something.

Until that moment, a tiny part of me had still been searching backward through our marriage, wondering if there had been a version of Michael I misunderstood.

Maybe the man I loved had existed once.

Maybe greed had changed him later.

Maybe I had missed the moment everything went wrong.

Hearing him at my funeral ended that search.

I did not need to understand when he became cruel.

I only needed to survive what he had chosen to become.

Ashley was questioned separately the next morning.

At first, she repeated Michael’s story.

Emma walked away.

The storm became dangerous.

They assumed I had fallen.

Then investigators confronted her with the inconsistencies.

They knew she had been at the overlook.

They knew Michael had not called for help.

They knew about the insurance policy.

And they knew what Michael had said at the funeral.

Ashley began protecting herself.

Her account changed.

She admitted she had been there after I went over the edge.

She admitted she had asked whether I was dead.

She admitted Michael had spoken about the fifty million dollars.

She tried to claim she had not known beforehand that he intended to push me.

Whether that was true became a question for prosecutors, not for me.

What mattered was that Michael had lost the one person he believed would keep his secret.

Investigators arrested him before he could leave Colorado.

They took Ashley into custody as well while her role was examined.
