Chapter 4 — My Husband Boarded My Flight With His Mistress—She Chose It Deliberately

4.9Editorial score

In her place stood a frightened woman realizing that the man who had promised her a new life would abandon her as quickly as he had betrayed his wife.

I gathered the papers and returned them to my crew bag.

“This conversation is over,” I said.

Ethan caught my wrist lightly.

I looked down at his hand.

He released me immediately.

“Elena, please.

We have seven hours.

Let me explain everything.”

“You had eight months.”

I opened the curtain.

Several first-class passengers looked away too late.

One man became intensely interested in his newspaper.

A woman near the window stared at Vanessa’s untouched champagne.

The humiliation Vanessa had planned for me had settled over all three of us, but it no longer belonged to me alone.

I returned to work.

I served meals.

I checked seat belts when we encountered turbulence.

I brought water to a nervous teenager and found an extra blanket for the elderly passenger from boarding.

Every ordinary task reminded me that my life was larger than the betrayal sitting in seats 2A and 2B.

Ethan tried twice to approach the galley.

The lead attendant sent him back to his seat both times.

Vanessa drank both glasses of champagne and ordered a third.

It was refused.

For the rest of the flight, they barely spoke.

Once, while passing through the cabin, I saw Ethan whispering urgently to her.

Vanessa turned toward the window and shook her head.

Later, she whispered something back that made him grip the armrest.

Their grand beginning in Paris had collapsed before we crossed the Atlantic.

An hour before landing, Ethan wrote a note on a napkin and asked another attendant to give it to me.

I did not open it.

I placed it beside the other documents in my bag.

When the aircraft touched down at Charles de Gaulle, passengers applauded lightly.

Vanessa flinched at the sound, as though she had forgotten other people existed.

I stood at the door with the lead attendant while the cabin emptied.

Ethan and Vanessa remained in their seats until everyone else had left.

They seemed to believe that delaying would give them privacy.

It did not.

Two representatives from the Paris office of Ethan’s company were waiting beyond the jet bridge with an outside compliance adviser.

They were not police officers, and no one was arrested.

The truth was less theatrical and more dangerous to Ethan.

He was informed that he had been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the use of company funds.

Vanessa received the same notice.

They were asked to surrender their company laptops and work phones.

Ethan looked at me.

“You contacted them?”

“I sent them the records.”

“You tried to destroy my career.”

“No.

I showed them what you charged to it.”

Vanessa stepped toward the company representatives.

“This is a personal dispute.

She is retaliating because of our relationship.”

The adviser opened a folder.

“The airline supplied the original upgrade request after receiving a preservation notice.

The payment authorization and attached anniversary message came through the corporate travel account.”
