The answer landed with humiliating simplicity.

“I met him because I found transfers I didn’t recognize,” Emily continued.

“I thought someone was stealing from you.

I was trying to stop it.”

Ashley shook her head.

“Convenient.”

Emily removed a small recorder from her bag.

Its casing was scratched, and a strip of tape held the battery cover in place.

“I took this to the meeting because I was frightened,” she said.

“The investigator explained that the account had been opened using a copy of my driver’s license, but the recovery email and verification number did not belong to me.”

Michael looked at the recorder but did not reach for it.

“Whose number?”

Emily’s gaze moved to Ashley.

Ashley stepped toward the table.

The security officer moved between them.

“This is absurd,” she said.

“An old recording proves nothing.”

“It proves I reported the theft before you accused me of committing it,” Emily replied.

Michael’s phone vibrated.

He almost ignored it, then saw the name of his company’s general counsel.

He answered on speaker.

“Michael,” the attorney said, “we received the hospital audit you forwarded.

I asked our forensic team to compare the contact data with the old transfer file.”

Ashley’s face tightened.

The attorney continued.

“The bank account opened under Emily Carter’s name used an authentication number ending in 4418.

That number belonged to a company phone issued to Ashley Monroe.”

No one spoke.

“We also recovered deleted approval emails from the archive,” the attorney said.

“They were routed through Ashley’s account, then altered to display Emily’s address.

We’re locking Ashley out of every company system now.”

Ashley lunged for her phone.

The security officer held out his hand.

“Please place it on the table.”

“You cannot take my property.”

“We are not taking it,” Dana said.

“But you cannot use it inside this restricted records meeting.

Law enforcement has been notified regarding the forged hospital authorization.”

Ashley looked at Michael as though she expected him to intervene.

For months, he would remember that look.

It held no remorse, only disbelief that he was no longer standing where she had positioned him.

“I did everything for you,” she said.

Michael’s voice was flat.

“You did everything to control what I knew.”

“You were miserable with her.

She questioned every business decision.

She made you feel guilty for wanting more.”

Emily’s mouth parted slightly, but Michael raised a hand.

Not to silence her.

To stop himself from hiding behind her response.

“She asked me to remember that employees were people,” he said.

“She asked me to come home for dinner.

You turned that into betrayal because it was useful.”

Ashley’s composure cracked.

“She would have trapped you with those babies.”

“They are my children.”
