Chapter 5 — My Father Claimed My House While My Baby Froze Outside

A slamming door could make her freeze.

If Owen cried at night, she sometimes woke convinced she was still outside and unable to warm him.

Healing was slower than the legal case.

I added Hannah to the legitimate deed as an equal owner.

She read every page before signing.

Major Ruiz reviewed it with both of us, and Hannah chose where each original and certified copy would be stored.

It was not a grand gesture.

It was a correction.

The house had always been ours in every way that mattered.

Now no document could pretend otherwise.

By the following winter, the porch had been repaired and enclosed with glass panels to block the wind.

Hannah chose the design herself.

She placed a small bench near the door, not because she had forgotten what happened there, but because she refused to surrender part of her home to the memory.

On the season’s first snowy evening, Owen pulled himself upright against that bench.

Hannah knelt a few feet away.

I crouched beside her with my hands ready.

Owen released the bench and took three uncertain steps toward us.

He fell laughing into Hannah’s arms.

Behind him, snow touched the glass and melted without ever reaching the floor.

The porch where my parents had abandoned my wife and son became the place where our child took his first steps back toward us, safe, wanted, and warm.
