Chapter 4 — My Family Said I Agreed—Then the Police Opened the File

4.9Editorial score

By early afternoon, my parents arrived to collect the children under a temporary safety arrangement while officials continued reviewing what had happened.

Mom found me near the station entrance.

Her face was pale with anger.

“Olivia.”

I kept walking.

“Olivia, stop.”

I stopped.

Dad stood several feet behind her, looking older than he had the night before.

Mom lowered her voice.

“You have made this much bigger than it needed to be.”

For one stunned second, I couldn’t respond.

Then I said, “I didn’t leave four children alone.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.

I don’t.”

“Ryan and Madison thought you were coming.”

“I told them I wasn’t.”

“You were angry.”

“I was clear.”

Mom’s jaw tightened.

“This could seriously affect them.”

I looked at her.

“That is because of what they did.”

“They’re expecting another baby.

Do you understand the stress they’re under?”

“And those four children were already here.”

Dad finally spoke.

“Your mother isn’t saying what they did was right.”

I turned to him.

“Did you tell the police I had agreed to watch them?”

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Mom jumped in.

“I said you normally help.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Dad looked at the floor.

I felt the last piece click into place.

Last night, when Madison insulted me, nobody defended me because nobody believed I had the right to refuse.

This morning, when reality collided with their expectation, they hadn’t questioned Ryan and Madison’s decision first.

They had questioned mine.

Mom reached for my arm.

I stepped back.

“Please don’t.”

Her hand dropped.

“What are you trying to prove?” she asked.

“Nothing.”

That seemed to confuse her more than anger would have.

I wasn’t trying to punish anyone.

I wasn’t trying to win.

I simply wasn’t going to rescue adults from consequences they had created by ignoring my answer.

Ryan called that evening.

I answered once.

His first words were, “Are you happy now?”

I almost hung up immediately.

Instead, I said, “Are the kids okay?”

“They’re with Mom and Dad.”
