“Sophia?”
“They are at the apartment.
Victoria used the key.”
There was no surprise in her voice.
“Are you safe?”
“The chain is on.
Building security is here.”
“Put me on speaker.”
I did.
My attorney’s voice filled the entryway.
“Mr.
Bennett, Mrs.
Bennett, you were both served with written notice revoking access to this residence.
Mr.
Bennett, you also signed a sworn declaration confirming all keys had been surrendered.
Do not attempt to cross that threshold.”
Victoria stared at the phone.
“This is absurd.
I am his mother.”
“That does not give you a legal right to enter Ms.
Sophia’s home.”
Richard moved closer to the gap.
“There is no need to threaten anyone.”
“No one is threatening you,” my attorney replied.
“I am describing the consequences of choices you are making on camera.”
The guard glanced toward the ceiling lens.
Richard followed his gaze.
For the first time that morning, he seemed to understand that the hallway itself was a witness.
He reached for Victoria’s arm.
“Mother, give me the key.”
She jerked away.
“No.
She does not get to erase us because some judge signed a piece of paper.”
Then she made the mistake that transformed the morning from an argument into evidence.
She looked directly at me and said, “You married into this family.
Your money became family money.
That card was part of the arrangement.”
The hallway went still.
Richard closed his eyes.
My attorney spoke first.
“Thank you, Mrs.
Bennett.
That was very clear.”
Victoria’s expression changed.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
I turned the final page.
It was not another card statement.
It was a formal demand prepared after the divorce settlement had been signed but before it became final.
The document listed charges made on my account during the separation, after I had notified Richard that Victoria’s use was no longer authorized.
My attorney had advised me not to send it immediately.
We needed to know whether Richard would honor the settlement, return the keys, and allow the financial separation to stand.
If he did, we could close the chapter without another fight.
If he did not, the demand would be supported by his own conduct.
Victoria had just supplied that support while standing in front of a building camera.
Richard read the bold line at the top of the page.
His face lost its color.
