I would not be returning to the life Bradley thought he had thrown me out of.
When the call ended, I sat for a moment with my phone in my lap.
I thought about that morning in the mediator’s office.
Bradley’s smirk.
Brittany’s laugh.
The penthouse keys hitting the desk.
His voice saying there was nothing worth dividing.
For years, I believed strength meant winning the argument in the moment.
Bradley was good at those arguments because he was willing to become louder, colder, and crueler until everyone else became exhausted.
Eventually I learned something more useful.
You do not have to correct every lie the second it is spoken.
Sometimes you document it.
Sometimes you let the person repeat it.
Sometimes you let them sign their name beneath it.
Then you open the folder.
Madison ran toward me, laughing.
“Mom! Look!”
A plane was passing overhead.
She pointed at it with both hands.
“Where do you think that one is going?”
I looked up through the trees.
“Somewhere magical,” I said.
She grinned because that was still what she believed about airplanes.
This time, I did too.
