Chapter 4 — My Brother Stole My Home—Then I Opened the Deployment Folder

4.9Editorial score

For the first time since I had returned, he looked at me without a smirk.

Emma pressed play.

Ryan’s recorded voice filled the dining room.

“You will sign where I point.

Ethan will never know the difference.”

Then Mother’s voice followed.

“Stop crying.

You brought this on yourself by resisting.

Once the company is in Ryan’s name, this family will finally be secure.”

A scraping sound came through the recording, followed by Emma begging them to leave.

Ryan’s voice became colder.

“If you tell Ethan, I will show him the transfers from your login.

He will think you stole from him.

Who do you imagine he will believe?”

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Emma’s breathing was shallow.

She stared at the table as if she had been returned to the room where the recording was made.

I crouched beside her chair.

“Look at me.”

She tried, but her eyes filled.

“I believed it for one night,” I said.

“I believed you had betrayed me, and I asked you if there was someone else.

I am sorry.”

“You did not know.”

“I should have seen your fear before I saw my own.”

Emma covered her mouth.

I did not ask her to forgive me.

Not then.

Apologies were not commands, and forgiveness was not another document someone could force her to sign.

Across the table, Ryan began clapping slowly.

It was the last performance of a man losing control.

“Beautiful,” he said.

“A damaged wife, a heroic husband, and a recording with no context.”

He looked toward the phone.

“She edited it.”

Emma shook her head.

Ryan pointed at her.

“She has been moving money for months.

Check the account access.

It all came from her devices.”

“That is because you forced her,” I said.

“Prove it.”

Mother recovered enough to join him.

“Emma has always been fragile.

We tried to help her.

She became violent and unpredictable.

Those bruises could have come from anywhere.”

The cruelty of the statement struck harder than shouting would have.

Emma went rigid.

Then something in her expression changed.

Fear did not disappear.

It simply stopped controlling her next action.

She pushed back her sleeve.

Finger-shaped marks remained along her forearm.

“Ryan made these on Tuesday,” she said.
