Chapter 3 — My Brother Stole My Home—Then I Opened the Deployment Folder

“She has thought carefully enough,” I said.

Ryan reached for the phone.

I covered it with my hand.

He pulled back.

The secure voice continued from the speaker.

“The financial institution has now frozen all accounts connected to the disputed transfers.

The contracting authority has been notified of an attempted unauthorized ownership change.

Corporate counsel is filing emergency actions this morning.”

Mother rose from her chair.

“You had no right to freeze our money.”

The room went still.

Our money.

Ryan looked at her.

She realized the mistake too late.

I repeated her words softly.

“Your money?”

Mother lifted her chin.

“Money Ryan lawfully acquired.”

“Through documents I did not sign?”

“You left,” she snapped.

“You abandoned your responsibilities and expected the rest of us to survive on promises.”

“I arranged every payment before I deployed.

The mortgage, utilities, payroll, insurance, Emma’s expenses—everything was covered.”

“You built a company and gave your own brother nothing.”

“I offered him a job.”

“You humiliated him.”

Ryan pushed back his chair and stood beside her.

“This is not about old family arguments,” he said.

“The documents are legal.

Emma signed them.”

His confidence returned when he said her name.

He still believed she would be too afraid to contradict him.

Emma stared at the phone.

Then she looked at me.

“There is something you have not heard,” she whispered.

Ryan’s face changed.

It was small—a tightening around the eyes, a twitch near his mouth—but I saw it.

“What?” I asked.

Emma reached for the phone with an unsteady hand.

She unlocked it and opened an audio folder hidden behind an ordinary application icon.

“I started recording after they took my new phone,” she said.

“This one was still connected to the house network.

They thought it was broken.”

Mother stepped away from the table.

“Emma, you do not understand the legal consequences of secretly recording people.”

Emma flinched, but she did not put the phone down.

I glanced at the secure line.

The voice answered the unspoken question.

“Do not delete, edit, or distribute anything.

Preserve the original device.

Local counsel will address admissibility.

For now, note that it may support the request for immediate protection and further investigation.”

Mother’s face tightened.

Ryan moved toward Emma.

I stepped between them.

He stopped.
