Chapter 6 — I Called Her Stepmother—Until My Birth Record Named Her

4.9Editorial score

The cabin was smaller than I remembered.

The porch leaned to one side, several roof shingles were missing, and weeds had swallowed the path.

Joy stood in front of it with tears in her eyes.

“I thought I had lost this place,” she said.

“We nearly did.”

“You should not spend your life paying for my mistakes.”

I looked at her scar, her healed hands, and the photograph she carried inside my father’s old folder.

“You spent your life paying for mine before I was old enough to make them.”

We repaired the roof first.

The porch took another year.

I planted bougainvillea beneath the windows even though the Minnesota winters made keeping it alive difficult.

Joy laughed at my improvised greenhouse and accused me of treating flowers like a chemistry experiment.

Inside the cabin, we framed the photograph from the county records office.

For years, I had looked at that image and seen evidence of betrayal.

Now I saw two frightened parents standing beside a truth they had finally decided to face.

My father died before he could speak it.

The woman who raised me died after making room for it.

Joy carried it alone until a cruel person tried to turn it into a weapon.

The weapon failed because the truth was not that Joy had deceived me.

The truth was that she had loved me under every name I gave her.

Stepmother.

Trash picker.

Burden.

And finally, Mom.
