Chapter 5 — Her Violent Ex Claimed Her—Then the Hotel Video Rewrote Everything

“So are you.”

His mask slipped.

“You ungrateful little—”

He stepped toward her.

An officer blocked him.

Derek shoved the officer’s arm away and shouted, “She is mine!”

The hallway camera recorded every word.

So did the body cameras worn by both officers.

Derek was restrained before he reached the penthouse threshold.

He cursed Nora, threatened the hotel, and demanded that Dominic order everyone to release him.

Dominic watched without expression.

“You wanted me to send her downstairs,” he said quietly.

“You should have considered what my cameras might send with her.”

Derek went pale.

The officers escorted him to the elevator he had tried to force open less than an hour earlier.

This time, the doors closed on him.

Nora did not feel victorious.

She felt empty, then furious, then exhausted enough to fold in half.

The security supervisor sat beside her while she completed the report.

Dominic remained across the room, taking calls in a low voice.

He ordered the original video files duplicated and preserved.

One copy went to investigators.

Another was placed on an encrypted drive for Nora’s attorney.

When the paperwork was finished, the older officer told Nora that Derek would be held while the allegations were reviewed.

The threats, assault footage, tracking device, attempted interference with hotel staff, and his conduct with police would all be documented.

“No one can promise what happens next,” the officer said.

“But tonight, we have evidence.”

For Nora, those words mattered more than promises.

Evidence could not be charmed by flowers.

Evidence did not become embarrassed when Derek raised his voice.

Evidence did not ask what she had done to make him angry.

She stayed in the guest room that night with the door locked from the inside.

A hotel doctor examined her ankle and shoulder.

Nothing was broken, though the bruising around her wrist darkened by morning.

Nora barely slept.

Each time the building creaked, she expected Derek’s key in the lock.

No key came.

At sunrise, she walked into the living room wearing borrowed hotel clothes.

Dominic stood by the windows with a cup of coffee.

The city below looked gray and ordinary.

On the table waited her sealed clutch, a new phone charger, and a thick envelope.

“What is that?” Nora asked.

“Copies of the footage, the incident report, contact information for an attorney, and the name of a secure residence that does not publish guest records.”

She stiffened.

“What do you want?”

Dominic set down his cup.

“Nothing.”

“Men like you always want something.”

“Usually.” His eyes moved toward the envelope.

“Not this time.”

Nora studied him, searching for the hidden price.

“I’m not replacing one man who thinks he owns me with another.”

Dominic’s face remained calm.

“I know,” he said.

“That is the point.”

He did not touch her.
