She did not pursue him or strike again.

She ran.

Derek lunged after her, hit the corner of a marble column, recovered, and continued chasing her toward the elevator.

The camera above the elevator captured Nora squeezing through the doors as Derek reached for the gap.

His hand missed.

He struck the steel and shouted, “Open the damn door, Nora! You think you can run from me?”

The officers exchanged a look.

Then they watched the earlier recording of Derek telling the clerk that Nora suffered violent episodes.

Finally, the supervisor placed the sealed tracker on the table and showed them the footage of Derek hiding it in Nora’s bag.

The older officer’s expression hardened.

“Did you consent to being tracked?”

“No.”

“Did you know that device was there?”

“No.”

“Has he found you unexpectedly before?”

“Twice after I moved.

More times after I changed my routine.”

Nora unlocked her phone and opened a folder she had once been too ashamed to show anyone.

Inside were photographs of bruises, screenshots of threats, missed calls from dozens of numbers, and voicemails she had saved but never played aloud.

She pressed the first recording.

Derek’s voice filled the room.

“You don’t get to disappear from me.

I decide when this ends.”

Another recording followed.

“You can change apartments every week.

I’ll still find you.”

The officers stopped asking whether the incident might have been a misunderstanding.

One of them called downstairs.

Derek was no longer at the front desk.

For a moment, panic flashed through Nora so sharply that the room tilted.

Then the penthouse doors rattled.

A fist struck the wood from the hallway.

“Nora!” Derek shouted.

“Tell them you came with me! Tell them you’re confused!”

The two Cassio guards moved, but Dominic lifted one finger.

“Let the officers handle it.”

The guards stopped.

Derek hit the door again.

“She’s my fiancée! She belongs with me!”

The officers opened the door together.

Derek stood between two hotel security employees, his face flushed and his collar hanging open.

He saw Nora and immediately softened his expression.

“There you are,” he said, as though greeting a lost child.

“Baby, you’re scared.

Come here.

We’ll go home and talk.”

Nora felt the old reflex rise inside her—the need to calm him before he became worse.

She gripped the edge of the chair.

“No.”

Derek’s smile tightened.

“You’ve been drinking.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand who these people are.” He pointed toward Dominic.

“He’s dangerous.”

Dominic said nothing.

Nora looked directly at Derek.
