Chapter 2 — He Slapped His New Wife—Then Her Attorney Opened the Folder

4.9Editorial score

Lilah removed another document from the folder.

“At 8:17 this morning, my client activated standing protective instructions concerning assets and discretionary transfers under her control.

Those instructions also directed security to preserve all recordings from this property.”

Cynthia looked sharply toward the pantry camera.

“Those recordings are private.”

“Correct,” Lilah said.

“And they are being preserved by the party authorized to preserve them.”

Colton pointed at me.

“She provoked me.”

Nobody moved.

He heard himself, realized how it sounded, and tried again.

“She came into my family’s home and started ordering Reagan around.”

I looked at the coffee on the floor.

“I asked her to wash a plate.”

Reagan crossed her arms.

“You were being disrespectful.”

The bank representative quietly set his case on the table.

“Whether the family considers the request disrespectful is not relevant to the banking instructions we received.”

Colton turned on him.

“Then explain why my cards aren’t working.”

“The cards tied to discretionary corporate accounts have been suspended.

Personal accounts remain personal.”

His father slammed a palm onto the table.

“You cannot freeze Tate Hospitality money without my approval.”

The representative did not flinch.

“The suspended funds are subject to Keystone Horizon’s authorization provisions.

Your approval is not the controlling approval.”

That was the moment the older man’s anger turned into recognition.

Years earlier, Tate Hospitality had needed capital.

The family had continued operating the restaurants, appearing in photographs, hosting events, and telling everyone the Tate name represented stability.

Keystone Horizon had supplied the financial structure behind that stability.

The family retained their roles and their public image, but the controlling protections attached to the investment had never disappeared.

I had never used that power to humiliate them.

Until that morning, I had never needed to use it at all.

Colton came closer to me.

“So this was your plan? Marry me and take my family’s company?”

“No.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Keystone Horizon was involved with Tate Hospitality before you put a ring on my finger.

Marriage didn’t give me control.

Marriage is the reason I avoided using it.”

His expression twisted.

“You set me up.”

I looked at the camera.

“Did I move your hand?”

That shut him up.

Lilah slid another sheet from the folder.

“Security has confirmed the kitchen recording was successfully preserved.”

Cynthia’s face tightened.

“There was no need for that.

It was a family disagreement.”

“A family disagreement?” I asked.

She looked at my lip and then away.

“Colton lost his temper.

Couples fight.”

“And Reagan poured coffee onto the floor and told me to clean it.”
