Chapter 5 — He Said He Supported Me—Then His Mother Arrived With Empty Tupperware

“You did say that,” Henry admitted.

Nancy waved a hand.

“I was speaking generally.”

“You were speaking about us,” I said.

“I said you two should know who contributes what.”

I smiled faintly.

“Excellent advice.”

Then I turned the spreadsheet around so she could see the totals.

The room became completely quiet.

Nancy read the first figure.

Then the second.

Then she looked at Henry.

“Is this right?”

He stared at the pages.

“It looks right.”

“Looks right?”

“I don’t know every number, Mom.”

“But she makes that much?”

There it was.

The question underneath everything.

I hadn’t hidden my career.

Nancy knew my job title.

Henry knew my salary.

But somewhere along the way, they had reduced my work to background noise while Henry’s paycheck became proof that he was the provider.

“Yes,” Henry said quietly.

“She makes more than I do.”

Nancy blinked.

Ryan looked at me.

Julie slowly uncrossed her arms.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Nancy did something almost impressive in its predictability.

She changed the argument.

“Well, then you can afford the lunches.”

Julie closed her eyes.

Ryan muttered, “Mom.”

I laughed once.

Not loudly.

I couldn’t help it.

Nancy looked furious.

“What’s so funny?”

“That’s the whole problem.”

I closed the folder.

“When you thought Henry had more money, I was a burden.

Now that you know I have more money, my money belongs to everybody.”

She opened her mouth.

I raised one hand.

“No.

We’re done moving the rule every time the facts change.”

Henry looked down.

That hurt more than I expected.

Not because I wanted him embarrassed.

I didn’t.

I wanted him to understand what he had done.

He hadn’t merely suggested separate finances.

Couples could arrange money a hundred different ways and still respect each other.

He had looked at a woman who had spent years carrying more than her share and told her he was tired of carrying her.
