The denial came instantly.
Lydia slid a still photograph from the folder.
Cade holding the velvet box.
Even from where I stood, I could see the shape of it.
Savannah saw it too.
Her shoulders dropped.
Cade’s composure finally cracked.
“You have been spying on me in my own home.”
Lydia answered before I could.
“The cameras predate your marriage.”
He pointed at me.
“This is exactly what she wanted.
She came here to destroy me.”
I shook my head.
“No.
I came to retrieve my mother’s pearls.”
“That could have been handled privately.”
“You put them on her publicly.”
He had no answer to that.
The chapel seemed smaller now.
The people Cade had invited to witness his new beginning were witnessing the end of something else instead: the version of himself he had spent years constructing.
He had wanted them to see a composed man escaping an unstable wife and moving gracefully toward a new family.
Instead they saw him confronted with a signed agreement, security footage, and his wife’s dead mother’s necklace in his mistress’s hands.
Savannah stepped away from the altar.
Her father moved toward her, but she shook her head.
She was staring at Cade.
“You told me she gave up everything in the house.”
“She did.”
“I did not,” I said.
Cade turned on me.
“You moved out.”
“Temporarily.
On Lydia’s advice.
The court filings say exactly that.”
Lydia tapped the folder.
“They do.”
He looked around as though searching for somebody who would rescue him from the facts.
Nobody volunteered.
Then he made his worst mistake.
He laughed.
It was not a real laugh.
It was the brittle sound of a man trying to make everyone else feel foolish for taking something seriously.
“All of this over a necklace?”
My daughter heard him.
Her face changed.
She knew what those pearls meant even if he did not.
I felt her small hand tighten around mine again.
I looked directly at Cade.
“No.
All of this over what you believed you were allowed to take from me.”
The laugh disappeared.
Lydia continued.
The pearl necklace was only one problem.
Because our divorce was pending, both sides were already under instructions to preserve property and disclose significant transfers.
The prenup made ownership of the pearls unusually clear.
The security footage made the method of removal clear.
