“I know.”

Her voice was calm.

That calmness frightened me more than anger.

“I found him.”

“I know.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Another silence.

Then Grace said, “Don’t make this about whether you feel sorry.”

I closed my eyes.

“You’re right.”

“You locked a door on me, Ethan.”

“I know.”

“No.

You know the sentence.

I need you to understand the choice.”

I looked at the key still in my hand.

She continued.

“Your mother cried, and you decided my freedom was negotiable.”

There was nothing I could say that would make that smaller.

So I didn’t try.

“I understand why you left the ring.”

“You understand part of it.”

My throat tightened.

“And the baby?”

“Our child is safe.”

Our child.

Not our marriage.

Behind me, Vivian whispered, “Tell her to come home.”

Grace heard her.

“Is she standing there?”

“Yes.”

“Then listen carefully.

I’m not coming back while she is in that house.

And I’m not coming back because you order me to.”

“I won’t.”

“I have already called for help for Daniel.”

I looked at my father.

“Help is coming?”

“Yes.

He needs medical attention.

And people need to see that room before anyone changes it.”

Vivian rushed down the last steps.

“Give me the phone.”

I stepped between her and Daniel.

It was such a small movement.

But my mother stopped as though she had hit a wall.

For the first time, I had physically placed myself on the other side of her demand.

Grace spoke again.

“Do not let her move anything.”

“I won’t.”

“And Ethan?”

“Yes?”

“You need to tell them what you did to me too.”

My hand tightened around the phone.
