“Yes.”

“Because Vivian told you to?”

I couldn’t force the word out.

My silence answered him.

He lowered his eyes.

“I spent years afraid she would make you into someone who couldn’t recognize cruelty if she called it love.”

The sentence landed harder than anything he could have screamed.

I looked around the room.

There was a metal tray with half a piece of bread on it.

A plastic water jug.

A stack of blankets.

An old chair.

On a shelf stood medicine bottles with labels turned toward the wall.

The door had a locking bolt on the outside.

“How long have you been here?”

Daniel’s mouth tightened.

“Not every day of thirty years.

But long enough.”

Footsteps sounded above us.

Vivian appeared at the top of the passage.

“Daniel is sick,” she said.

“He always has been.”

My father gave a tired laugh.

“There it is.”

She descended two steps, gripping the railing.

“He left us, Ethan.

He abandoned you.

I protected you from that.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I tried to leave her.

I tried to take you with me.”

“Liar.”

“I had already packed Ethan’s things.”

Vivian’s expression sharpened.

Daniel looked at me.

“She told me if I tried to take you, I would never see you again.

Then she made sure I didn’t.”

My mind rejected the words even as the room around me confirmed them.

The hidden door.

The outside bolt.

The food tray.

The medicine.

The scratches in the pantry wall.

Grace’s message.

I turned to my mother.

“What did you do?”

Her eyes filled again.

Everything in me recognized the performance.

The trembling mouth.

The wounded stare.

The tiny shake of her head that said I had disappointed her merely by asking.

It had worked on me for decades.

This time it didn’t.

“I kept this family together,” she said.

“You told me he was dead.”

“I gave you stability.”
