It had been discussed beforehand.
Planned.
Promised.
The elderly donor who had been seated near me shook her head slowly.
One of Grant’s colleagues looked away from him.
I didn’t need to add anything.
Grant did it himself.
“This has nothing to do with anyone here,” he said.
A board member near the front finally spoke.
“You made the announcement here, Grant.”
Grant froze.
The man didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t need to.
“Perhaps you should end the evening,” he added.
Grant looked around the room and seemed to understand for the first time that the witnesses he had assembled for my humiliation were not automatically on his side.
They were simply witnesses.
And witnesses remembered what they saw.
I placed the deed back inside my clutch.
“My attorney has prepared the separation documents,” I said.
“You’ll receive them through the proper channel.”
Grant lowered his voice.
“What are you asking for?”
The question nearly made me laugh.
He still thought this was a negotiation he could control if he discovered my price.
“Tonight? Nothing.”
“Don’t play games.”
“I’m not.”
I stepped closer so I no longer needed the microphone.
“You wanted a new beginning.
You have one.
But it doesn’t begin inside my house.”
His face tightened.
“You can’t throw me out tonight.”
“I didn’t say I was.
My attorney will handle what happens next.”
That distinction mattered.
I wasn’t going to give Grant the chaos he seemed to expect from me.
No screaming.
No dramatic attempt to drag luggage onto the lawn.
No scene he could later describe as irrational.
Everything would happen in writing.
Everything would be documented.
Everything would happen properly.
That frightened him more.
Brielle was crying now, although these tears looked very different from the ones she had carried onto the stage.
“Where am I supposed to go?” she asked Grant.
I looked at her.
“Wherever you were living before someone promised you my address.”
She flinched.
I didn’t enjoy saying it.
But neither did I soften it.
She had known I existed.
She had sat in my chair at the front table.
She had allowed Grant to introduce her as the woman transforming his life while I watched from the back of the room.
Whatever story Grant had told her privately, she had participated in what happened publicly.
Grant reached for my arm.
