Chapter 4 — He Called Her Unstable—Then She Opened Her Coat in Court

She was asked where the threat happened.

There had been no face-to-face confrontation, she admitted.

It had occurred during a phone call.

“What exactly did Dr.

Carter say?”

Marissa looked toward Evan.

The judge immediately intervened.

“Answer from your own memory, Ms.

Lane.”

Marissa swallowed.

She could not provide the threatening words.

She said my tone had been hostile.

My attorney asked whether I had threatened to hurt her.

“Not in those words.”

Threatened her employment?

“No.”

Threatened her family?

“No.”

Threatened to appear at her home?

“No.”

“Then what threat are you describing?”

Marissa’s voice dropped.

“She said she knew about me and Evan.”

The entire room changed.

I had not expected her to say it so plainly.

Neither had Evan.

His head snapped toward her.

Marissa began speaking too quickly.

She said she had believed I was trying to intimidate her.

She said Evan had told her I could become unstable when jealous.

She said he had warned her that if I contacted her, she should document it.

My attorney asked, “Did Dr.

Carter ever threaten you with violence?”

“No.”

“Did she ever threaten to harm herself in your presence?”

“No.”

“Did you personally witness her behave violently toward Mr.

Carter?”

“No.”

Three allegations had entered the courtroom wearing certainty.

Under questioning, all three began to depend on Evan.

That was the weakness in the story he had built.

For years he had controlled each audience separately.

He told Vivian one version.

Marissa another.

Friends something gentler.

Me something crueler.

He had never expected all those versions to occupy the same room while someone asked precise questions.

When Evan finally testified, he began well.

He was practiced at appearing reasonable.

He said our marriage had become difficult.

He said he worried about my emotional health.

He denied intentionally injuring me.

He described himself as frightened by my behavior and insisted the restraining order was about safety, not punishment.

Then my attorney asked why he had filed for divorce the morning after the kitchen incident.

He said the timing was coincidental.
