Chapter 3 — He Called Her Unstable—Then She Opened Her Coat in Court

4.9Editorial score

“No.”

One word.

That was enough to alter the temperature in the room.

Then my attorney turned to the claim that I had injured myself for attention.

That allegation came from Vivian.

When Vivian took the stand, she entered with the same expression she wore at charity lunches: controlled, polished, mildly inconvenienced by everyone around her.

She testified that I had always been emotional.

She said Evan had tried to help me.

She said she had witnessed behavior that frightened her.

My attorney asked her to describe the specific occasion on which she claimed to have seen me injure myself.

Vivian paused.

Then she gave an answer without a date.

My attorney asked for the month.

Vivian said she could not remember.

The location?

Our house, she said.

Which room?

Another pause.

She finally said the bedroom.

My attorney asked who else had been present.

Vivian’s eyes moved toward Evan.

“My son was nearby.”

“Nearby where?”

“In the house.”

“Did you personally see Dr.

Carter cause the injury?”

For the first time, Vivian stopped sounding certain.

“I saw the aftermath.”

My attorney did not raise her voice.

“Your sworn statement says you saw her hurt herself.”

Vivian’s mouth tightened.

“That is what I understood happened.”

“That was not my question.

Did you see it happen?”

Silence.

“No.”

The word landed harder than any accusation.

I watched Evan turn toward his mother.

Vivian had wanted to help him.

Instead, in less than two minutes, she had transformed a sworn eyewitness account into an assumption.

My attorney asked one final question.

“Who told you Dr.

Carter had caused the injury herself?”

Vivian looked at her son.

She did not answer immediately.

She did not need to.

The judge noticed.

Eventually she said, “Evan did.”

Evan’s attorney requested a brief recess.

The judge denied it.

Marissa was next.

She looked younger on the witness stand than she had sitting beside Evan’s legal team.

Nervousness had replaced the professional distance she had worn earlier.

She repeated that I had threatened her.

My attorney asked when.

Marissa gave the week but struggled with the day.
