Chapter 1 — My Husband Raised a Belt—Then His Mother Revealed Why He Married Me

4.9Editorial score

The courtroom monitor flickered once, then filled with the dim image of our bedroom.

No one spoke.

Derek sat rigid beside his lawyer.

His mother’s folded arms slowly loosened as the sound of his own voice came through the courtroom speakers.

“Mom, she’s gone crazy.”

The recording was clearer than I had expected.

Every word carried across the room without distortion.

Then his mother answered.

“Then follow the plan.

Before she realizes why you married her.”

Derek’s lawyer stood immediately.

“We object to this recording,” he said.

“We have no proof it is complete, authentic, or legally obtained.”

The judge looked toward my lawyer.

My lawyer did not argue.

He simply placed a printed authentication report beside the evidence drive.

“The original file was preserved directly from her phone,” he said.

“Its metadata is intact.

It was recorded in her own bedroom while she was documenting a threat against her safety and property.

The opposing party’s voice is also captured on the synchronized security footage already admitted for this hearing.”

The judge studied the report, then looked at Derek’s lawyer.

“I’ll hear it and determine what weight it deserves.”

Derek turned toward his mother.

She did not look back at him.

The recording continued.

“Get her signature tomorrow,” she said.

“Once the assets are transferred, no one will care what happens inside the marriage.”

A quiet murmur moved through the courtroom before the judge ordered silence.

Derek’s mother shot to her feet.

“That is not what I meant.”

The judge’s expression did not change.

“You will sit down.”

“She was emotional,” his mother insisted.

“My son was frightened.

I was trying to calm him.”

“By discussing the transfer of his wife’s assets?” the judge asked.

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.

My lawyer paused the audio.

“That call occurred less than two minutes after Derek attempted to strike his wife with a belt,” he said.

“The synchronized video will show what happened before and after it.”

Derek leaned toward his lawyer and whispered urgently.

His lawyer listened, frowned, and wrote something on a legal pad.

I watched Derek’s hands.

They were clenched beneath the table.

That was the part of him most people missed.

His face could perform regret.

His voice could soften on command.

But his hands always told the truth.

The monitor changed to the security footage from the smoke detector.

The camera had been installed after someone repeatedly stole cash from the small office I kept at home for gym paperwork.

Derek knew there was a security system in the house, but he had never cared enough to ask where every camera was located.

The video showed him entering the bedroom behind me.

It showed him locking the door.

It showed him removing his belt and striking the bedside lamp with the buckle.

The crack sounded even louder through the courtroom speakers.

Several people flinched.
