And the overdraft notice existed because the account had been pulled below the balance Grandma believed she still had.
The bank did not declare Vanessa guilty over the telephone.
Nobody sensible did.
But they did flag the disputed activity, begin their review, and place additional protections on Grandma’s account at her request.
That alone sent Vanessa into a panic.
She called me six times before noon.
On the seventh call, I answered.
“What did you do?” she demanded.
“I helped Grandma call her bank.”
“You had no right.”
I looked across the kitchen at Grandma.
She lifted one eyebrow.
“It’s her account,” I said.
“She has every right.”
“She is confused.”
“No, Vanessa.
She is asking questions.”
“You don’t know what I’ve been dealing with.”
“I know you told her to leave because she refused the facility you picked.”
“That is not what happened.”
“I was standing in your living room.”
Vanessa went silent.
Then she tried another direction.
“Grandma has been paranoid about money for months.”
“Interesting word.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means the money is actually missing.”
Her breathing changed.
Just slightly.
Then she said, “Mark handled some things for her.
Maybe she forgot.”
There it was.
The first attempt to move responsibility sideways.
I wrote the sentence down.
“Did Mark write the check?” I asked.
“I didn’t say that.”
“Did you?”
“I am not doing this with you.”
She hung up.
Grandma looked at the note I had written.
“Keep that,” she said.
At the courthouse that afternoon, Vanessa arrived with a folder of her own.
She had changed clothes.
Dark blazer.
Conservative shoes.
Hair pulled back.
She looked composed again.
Mark was beside her, pale and irritated, speaking quietly near the hallway wall.
When Vanessa saw Grandma walking toward the courtroom under her own power, she visibly stiffened.
Then she noticed the Adult Protective Services caseworker behind us.
For a second, all the performance disappeared.
Fear crossed her face.
Then it was gone.
She approached Grandma.
“Can we talk privately?”
Grandma stopped.
