No one did.
My aunt finally spoke.
“Claire’s been paying the mortgage?”
Mom answered too quickly.
“She helps.”
I almost admired the reflex.
Helps.
Three years of mortgage payments were help.
Property taxes were help.
Electricity, water, insurance, storm repairs, a refrigerator, and random emergency transfers were help.
Dad straightened.
“We never forced her.”
“No,” I said.
“You didn’t.”
That confused him.
I think he had expected me to accuse him of something dramatic enough to argue against.
Instead, I gave him the simplest truth.
“You asked.
I agreed.
I kept agreeing because I thought that was what family did.
But family does not humiliate the person keeping the lights on and then demand she wash the dishes.”
Tyler looked away.
Dad’s face tightened.
“This is about your brother now?”
“It’s about all of it.”
Mom shook her head.
“You always keep score.”
I laughed once, quietly.
“No.
If I kept score, you would have known the total a long time ago.”
That was the first moment Brad looked uncomfortable for them instead of for me.
I left.
Dad called before I reached the highway.
I let it ring.
Mom called twelve minutes later.
Then Tyler.
Then Dad again.
By the time I reached Boston, I had eleven missed calls and four messages.
The first message from Mom said they were sorry things had become heated.
The second said family should not make major financial decisions in anger.
Dad’s message said he wanted to “clear up misunderstandings.”
Tyler’s simply said, “Are you seriously cutting everything off?”
That one told me more than the others.
I did not answer that night.
I went home, took off the blue dress, and opened the drawer where I kept statements and receipts.
There was no secret trust.
No hidden ownership document.
No dramatic deed with my name on it.
The house legally belonged to my parents.
That had never been the point.
My power was much simpler.
I had been voluntarily paying obligations that were theirs.
And I could voluntarily stop.
I made a list because I wanted to be precise, not cruel.
Mortgage: remove my recurring transfer.
Electricity: cancel my automatic payment authorization after the current paid billing period.
