Chapter 3 — They Sent a Tired Father Away From the Hotel He Owned

4.9Editorial score

Richard’s expression changed.

Every Grand Regent lobby used synchronized security video and desk microphones.

The microphones were installed for employee protection during disputes, and staff members were notified of them during training.

Patricia knew that.

Her shoulders lowered.

“Mr.

Vance, I was under pressure.

The gala has put everyone on edge.”

“Pressure does not create character,” I said.

“It reveals it.”

Richard asked Lupita to return to her department while he handled the matter.

I stopped him.

“Lupita may stay.

She is the reason my daughter is sleeping in the room we reserved.”

Richard nodded.

We moved into the sitting area and closed the bedroom door most of the way.

Patricia remained standing while Richard opened the hotel’s security system on a tablet.

The footage began with my entrance into the lobby.

There I was on the screen, tired and unshaven, carrying Lily and the roses.

Patricia watched herself glance at me before I had spoken a single word.

The desk microphone captured everything.

“You’d probably fit in better at one of the budget motels near the highway.”

Patricia closed her eyes.

Then came Karla’s voice.

“Security can move him if he keeps holding up the desk.”

Richard paused the recording.

“Where is Karla now?”

“At the front desk,” Patricia said.

He called the night supervisor and instructed him to remove Karla from guest-facing duties until morning.

Patricia began to protest.

“She was only supporting my decision.”

“That is the problem,” I said.

Richard continued the recording.

Lupita appeared, asked whether the secondary screen had been checked, and was told to stick to housekeeping.

For the first time, anger broke through Richard’s professional expression.

“This is not an isolated service error,” he said.

“This is conduct toward a guest and conduct toward another employee.”

Patricia turned to me.

“You came here anonymously.

How were we supposed to know who you were?”

The question settled over the room.

I looked toward the bedroom where my daughter slept.

“You were not supposed to know.”

Patricia stared at me.

“I don’t understand.”

“My name is Ethan Vance.

I founded Vance Hospitality Group.

This hotel is one of seven properties my company owns.”

Her face went completely still.

Lupita looked from me to Richard, waiting for someone to say it was a misunderstanding.

Richard did not.

“Mr.

Vance is the principal owner of the Grand Regent,” he said.

Patricia gripped the back of a chair.

“I didn’t know.”

“That is precisely why this visit mattered,” I replied.
