Ethan laid his daughter on the bed and removed her shoes.

She reached instinctively for the stuffed bunny, and Lupita quietly pulled it from the backpack and handed it to him.

“Thank you,” Ethan said.

Lupita nodded.

“I’m sorry about downstairs.”

“You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“I still wish someone had stepped in sooner.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You did.”

Lupita started toward the door.

“Lupita.”

She turned.

“Why did you stop?”

She seemed confused.

“In the lobby.

Why did you get involved when you’d already been told it wasn’t your department?”

Lupita glanced at Lily.

“My husband used to travel for construction work.

When our children were small, he’d sometimes come home carrying one of them asleep because I was working nights.”

She smiled faintly.

“I suppose I saw him for a second.”

Ethan nodded.

“That’s all?”

“That should be enough.”

After she left, Ethan stood beside the window overlooking Chicago and held the roses loosely at his side.

He had built Vance Hospitality around a simple principle: guests rarely remembered the thread count of the sheets or the brand of marble in the lobby.

They remembered how a person made them feel when they were tired, embarrassed, lost, grieving, celebrating, or afraid.

Somewhere along the way, at least two employees at his flagship hotel had forgotten that.

And perhaps management had allowed them to forget.

That was what concerned him most.

Twenty minutes later, Lily was deeply asleep.

Ethan placed the roses in a water glass beside the window, then quietly stepped into the hall where Daniel was waiting.

“I pulled the lobby security footage,” Daniel said.

“Good.”

“And the audio from the desk microphone.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You record desk audio?”

“For training and incident review.

Guests are notified in the property privacy policy.”

“Then I want the full segment preserved.”

Daniel nodded.

They went downstairs to a private office behind the lobby.

Patricia and Karla were already there.

Neither looked smug anymore.

A security supervisor played the recording.

Ethan watched himself enter carrying Lily.

He listened to Patricia say there was no room.

He heard Karla laugh.

Then came the line about cheaper motels.

Neither woman could blame memory now.

Neither could claim the words had been misunderstood.

When the video ended, Daniel closed the laptop.

Patricia began crying quietly.

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan didn’t respond immediately.

Karla looked frightened but defensive.
