“And if family is the principle tonight,” I continued, “why was I good enough to receive the bill but not good enough to receive dinner?”
Patricia had no answer.
Rodrigo stepped closer only when I looked toward him.
“Mrs.
Eleanor?”
“The bill belongs to the party that made the reservation,” I said.
“Please handle it exactly as you would any other table.
No special treatment because of me.”
He nodded.
“Of course.”
Valerie stared at him.
“Wait.
You can’t make us pay all of this now.”
Rodrigo remained calm.
“The charges are for food and beverages served to your party, ma’am.”
“But she owns part of the restaurant!”
“Which is precisely why Mrs.
Eleanor has asked that your table receive no special treatment.”
A cousin suddenly became fascinated by his phone.
Rachel leaned back and folded her arms.
One of the other guests quietly asked how much his share was.
The alliance around Valerie began dissolving in real time.
Five minutes earlier, the bill had been hilarious because they believed it belonged to me.
Now that the same amount belonged to them, nobody was laughing.
Valerie’s voice dropped.
“Eleanor, don’t be petty.”
I looked at the lobster shells, empty champagne bottles, and plates scraped clean.
“I didn’t order any of this.
I didn’t eat any of it.
I wasn’t even invited to arrive while it was being served.
Paying for it would not be generosity.
It would be surrender.”
Sebastian finally pushed his chair back.
“Enough, Valerie.”
She stared at him.
“Excuse me?”
“She doesn’t owe us dinner.”
It was a small sentence.
Years earlier, hearing my son defend me with those words might have healed something instantly.
That night, it did not.
Because he had laughed when I walked in.
He had known what they were doing.
And people do not erase a betrayal simply because they become uncomfortable once it is exposed.
I slid the repayment agreement toward him.
“There is something else.”
His eyes fell to the paper.
“I’m done making new loans.”
Valerie’s head turned.
“What?”
I continued looking at Sebastian.
“I’m done paying expenses because you tell me they’re temporary emergencies.
I’m done stepping in before you have to solve your own problems.
And I’m done accepting disrespect as the price of having access to my son.”
Sebastian’s eyes grew wet, but I kept my voice even.
“You don’t have to repay everything tonight.
I am not here to destroy you.
