Chapter 1 — They Excluded His Daughter—Then the Groom Learned Why

4.9Editorial score

“Daniel, there’s something you need to know before June 14.”

Mark’s voice was calm, but there was a weight behind it that made me stand up from the kitchen table.

Across the room, Ethan was helping Lily with a worksheet.

She had her tongue pressed against the corner of her mouth while she concentrated, completely unaware that four adults were apparently unraveling over a wedding she had once been excited to attend.

In the background of Mark’s call, Vanessa had stopped crying.

“What happened?” I asked again.

Mark didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, I heard my mother say, “Mark, this is a family matter.”

Then Vanessa’s voice, sharper than I had ever heard it.

“Give me the phone.”

Mark ignored both of them.

“I asked Vanessa about Lily,” he said.

“At first she told me there had been a misunderstanding.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course she did.

“What kind of misunderstanding?”

“She said you had already decided not to bring Lily because formal events were difficult for her.”

My jaw tightened.

“That’s a lie.”

“I know.”

Two words.

No hesitation.

I glanced at my children again.

Ethan had noticed my expression now.

He looked toward me, but I gave him a small nod that meant everything was fine enough for the moment.

Mark continued.

“I asked why, if that was true, she specifically texted you that Ethan was invited.

She didn’t have an answer.”

Vanessa spoke somewhere behind him.

“I already explained this.”

Mark’s voice moved away from the receiver for a second.

“No, you explained what you wanted me to believe.”

The room on his end went quiet.

Then he came back to me.

“After that, your mother tried to say everyone agreed it would be easier without Lily.”

“That’s what she told me.”

“Except my family never agreed to anything.”

There it was.

The first crack.

Mom had not merely excluded Lily.

She had used Mark’s family as cover.

I asked, “Did they even know?”

“No.”

I sat down slowly.

Mark told me he had called his parents after our first conversation.

They had been confused.

They had never discussed excluding Lily.

They had assumed both of my children were invited because I was Vanessa’s brother.

When Mark returned to Vanessa with that information, the story changed again.

Now Vanessa said she had been worried Lily might become overwhelmed during the ceremony.

Mark asked whether Lily had ever disrupted one of their family events.

Vanessa couldn’t name one.

Then she said the photographer needed everything to run on schedule.

Mark asked whether the photographer had said anything about Lily.

No.

Then she blamed the formal dinner.
