Chapter 1 — They Demanded $500,000—Then the Surgeon Asked Lily for Her Autograph

4.9Editorial score

The surgeon held the black marker toward Lily as though she were someone famous.

For several seconds, nobody in the hospital corridor moved.

Lily stared at the marker.

Her bandaged right hand rested in her lap, so she slowly reached for it with her left.

Mrs.

Ashford stepped forward.

“What exactly is this?” she demanded.

The surgeon did not look at her.

He remained kneeling in front of my daughter.

“Tommy woke up asking for the brave girl,” he said.

“He told us she saved his life.

He wants her name on his new brace.”

The words passed through the corridor like a change in pressure.

Officer Caldwell’s posture shifted first.

He moved away from Lily and turned toward Damian.

Mr.

Ashford tightened his grip on the legal folder beneath his arm.

Mrs.

Ashford gave a disbelieving shake of her head.

“You have been given an inaccurate account.

This child attacked our son.”

The surgeon finally stood.

“I have been given a medical account,” he replied.

“And the medical evidence supports what Tommy told us.”

A nurse approached carrying the damaged brace inside a clear evidence bag.

One side had split near the lower ribs.

A deep inward dent marked the hard shell.

The surgeon pointed without touching it.

“That brace is designed to withstand normal impact.

It does not collapse like that from a child falling onto the floor.

A concentrated force was applied while Tommy was wearing it.”

Damian pressed the ice pack back against his face.

Mrs.

Ashford moved in front of him again.

“Are you accusing my son based on a damaged piece of plastic?”

“No,” the surgeon said.

“I am explaining why Tommy could not breathe.”

He turned to Officer Caldwell.

“The broken section pressed against Tommy’s chest and surgical area.

He suffered internal bleeding and a partially collapsed lung.

The pressure had to be removed immediately.”

My legs weakened beneath me.

Lily looked down at the marker in her left hand.

“Is he going to be okay?” she whispered.

The surgeon’s expression softened.

“He is stable.

We controlled the bleeding.

He will need time, but he is going to recover.”

Lily shut her eyes.

She did not smile.

She simply released a breath she seemed to have been holding since the equipment room.

The surgeon continued.

“Tommy said Lily told the other children not to pull him up.

That was important.

Moving him carelessly could have worsened the injury.

She sent one child for the nurse, pressed the emergency button on his device, and kept him still until help arrived.”
