Chapter 2 — They Demanded $500,000—Then Margaret Changed Every Lock

4.9Editorial score

For years, I had treated them as if they meant the same thing.

Ryan finally said, “We’re already dealing with the debt.

You knew we were under pressure.”

“I learned Tuesday that you were five hundred thousand dollars under pressure.”

“We didn’t want to worry you.”

“You walked into my kitchen and demanded that I pay it.”

“That was Lauren’s wording.”

I stared through the window at my son.

There it was again.

Not an apology.

Distance.

A small attempt to stand slightly away from the cruelty without admitting he had stood beside it.

“Ryan,” I said, “you were in the room.”

He did not answer.

Lauren did.

“He was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“From the details.”

“The details are apparently worth half a million dollars.”

Her shoulders tightened.

She held the original folder against her chest.

“We can fix this if everyone stops being emotional.”

That sentence almost impressed me.

I was standing alone in my own home, speaking in an even voice through a locked gate.

She was the one ringing my bell repeatedly at dusk because her cards had stopped working.

Yet somehow I was emotional.

I opened my folder.

“I have some details too.”

Ryan looked toward the house.

“What details?”

“Do you know how much I’ve paid toward your household in the last twelve months?”

He hesitated.

“No.”

Neither had I until that morning.

I told him the total.

Ryan’s face changed.

Lauren’s did not.

She said, “Those were gifts.”

“Some were.

Some were temporary help.

Some were expenses you simply started treating as mine.”

“You offered.”

“Sometimes.”

I turned a page.

“Did I offer to pay your groceries indefinitely?”

No answer.

“Did I offer to lease Lauren a vehicle indefinitely?”

Lauren crossed her arms.

“You knew we needed transportation.”

“You had transportation before that SUV.”

“That’s not the point.”

“It became the point the moment my money became a requirement for being considered family.”

Ryan stepped closer to the gate.

“Mom, please.

Can I just come inside?”

I looked at him for a long moment.
