“Then tape it down until morning.”
Claire smiled.
“Meaning to fix it doesn’t fix it.”
Vincent shook his head.
“I’m going to regret telling you that.”
“Probably.”
They spent the next hour doing things no neighborhood rumor would ever have predicted.
Manny swept broken glass.
Claire taped down the mat.
Vincent, one hand bandaged, held the edge flat with his shoe.
Old Danny finished his coffee and went home.
The young couple left a ridiculous tip.
Claire sent the recording to Vincent’s lawyer and then deleted the local copy at his request after confirming it had arrived.
Before closing, Vincent signed one more document Manny’s lawyer had prepared earlier that afternoon, confirming the transfer of the diner property without hidden debt or conditions.
Manny read every line twice.
“You really don’t want anything?”
Vincent shook his head.
“Pie once in a while.”
“Pie costs money.”
“Then put it on my tab.”
“You don’t have a tab.”
“Start one.”
Manny looked close to tears again, so he insulted Vincent’s coat instead.
By two in the morning, the diner was empty except for Claire and Vincent.
Manny had finally gone upstairs to call his sister and tell her that, somehow, he owned the building he’d spent half his life working inside.
Claire poured the last coffee of the night.
She placed it carefully in front of Vincent.
“No spills,” she said.
“Disappointing.”
She sat across from him.
Without the other customers, the diner felt smaller.
Vincent looked older now.
Not weaker.
Human.
“Why did you know my name?” Claire asked.
He nodded toward the register.
“Manny has the schedule taped underneath.”
Claire stared at him.
“That’s it?”
“What did you expect? A secret file?”
“Honestly? Yes.”
Vincent laughed again.
This time it came easier.
Claire smiled.
“There.”
“What?”
“You did it again.”
“Did what?”
“Sounded alive.”
His smile disappeared, but not because he was angry.
He looked down into his coffee.
“I haven’t felt like much of anything lately.”
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
She knew better than to cover an honest moment with easy comfort.
Finally she said, “Tonight you protected Manny without hurting anybody.
You said no when they expected you to surrender.
